What should you include in your flat lay photos?
Happy Monday Babes! First of all, what is a flat lay and should you even care?
First, flat lay photos are taken from an above angle or “birds eye view” of an array of objects arranged carefully. Next, you should care about flat lay photos ONLY if capturing little details matters to you. Wedding flat lay photos are the perfect way of getting all those smaller items that you spent so much time on collecting - together for a “perfect details” shot. What are the little details you ask? Your wedding rings, invitations, florals, and vows…just to name a few. You might have even pinned one or two in your “Dream Wedding” Pinterest board as inspiration! Now, if this sounds like something you want your photographer to capture on your wedding day, here are some tips on how to prepare & capture the perfect “aesthetic” shot.
Tips on how to prepare for your flat lay photos:
Store all items in a box - As you start collecting items you want included in your flat lay, store them ALL in one place. On the day of your wedding, give the box to your photographer. Trust me, this will save you a headache trying to track down all the smaller items and prevent anything from getting lost.
Consider your backdrop - As you arrive to your venue, take a quick tour and see if theres any “unique backdrops” you may want to incorporate. Some venues have really fun floor tiles or furniture with fun patterns that you can place your items on.
Play with textures - Create dimension within your photo by adding textures. From silk ribbons to dried florals, have some fun and play around until you achieve your desired look.
Have a balanced color palette - Remember, the goal is to achieve an aesthetic look. Keep in mind of your colors, you don’t want to over or under do it and lose the style you are going for.
Create a mockup - Practice makes perfect right? Play around with your items to create your desired look & take photos! Then share with your photographer or just hand them the box on your wedding day (and allow them creative control!)
